I have recently written a simple tool to record and replay my flight and would like to share it with the community.

And thanks IamSean for allowing me to include his video as a showcase of the tool's capability and the awesome graphic fidelity of MSFS.

Instructions

Extract and run FlightRecorder.Client.exe.

Features

Record and replay with your aircraft or an AI aircraft in the sim
Change replaying speed
- NOTE: when speeding up, your computer might not be able to load scenery fast enough and that will negatively affect frame rate.
Save recording into a file to replay later or on another computer
Export the recorded data into CSV for further analysis
Quickly jump to any time in your recording (you have to Pause Replay first)

Notes: The tool records this list of variables from SimConnect Structs.cs for each sim frame. Some of them are only for analysis and display and don’t affect replay.

Incompatibiity

FBW A32NX
- The 32NX starts to replace existing code that works with SimConnect with new code that ignores SimConnect. This means the aircraft will ignore the replay data Flight Recorder send to the sim. You will see that certain variables get replayed as in other aircraft, and the rest don't.
- Workaround (suggested by Abriael): since the recording still has correct data, you can replay it on stable/dev variant of the 32NX, or even the default A320.
Default A320 and A23NX
- Aileron reacts wrongly to simvar `AILERON POSITION` when aircraft is in the air.
- I have reported this in ZenDesk #95574. I'll wait for Sim Update 4 before working on a workaround.

Other Limitations and Notes

When starting a replay, your aircraft might be teleported to a far away location which doesn't have loaded terrain. This means the ground can jump up/down really quickly and you might get a crash (not CTD) due to damaged landing gear. Disable crash detection might be a good idea if you frequently replay your flight.
I don’t know a reliable way to tell if an engine is running or not, so this tool does not auto-start the engine (because it doesn’t know when). Hence, you should start recording/replaying when engine is already running (or the aircraft will move without a running engine) and stop recording before turning off the engine (not really a problem, but the tool might not shut the engine down for you). Not doing that won't prevent you from replaying or using any features, but replay can look like your aircraft is powered by magic ;).
Replay looks weird when turning on the ground. I’m not so sure what is happening there yet.
To prevent fighting with MSFS own calculation, the tool sends freeze command when you start replay and unfreeze when you stop replay.
This means replaying might conflict with other tools leverating the same freeze feature (e.g. YourControl when you are not in control, other replay tools).
AI aircraft jitters back and forth during replay, especially at high speed. I'm still trying to figure out the reason.

Thanks a lot for the great tool!

Is it possible in the future to hope for an option to automatically start recording when crossing a given height?

For example, on a descent at 3000 ft AGL recording begins.

Thanks for your continued development and improvement of this utterly fantastic app. I use it every flight. The hotkey idea is terrific but I do have a suggestion. The problem for me is I usually activate record just before a landing and depending on the landing difficulty, it is sometimes challenging to take your hand off my joystick to work the mouse and click record. When I read this update now has hotkeys I thought...great! Only the problem remains as the default hotkey setup requires that I still have to take my hand off the joystick as the keypresses are too 'spread out' requiring two hands to activate. The Home, End buttons, etc., are simply too far apart from Alt-Ctrl-Shift to activate with one hand. Is there a way a user can customize these buttons? In the absence of this I would recommend all 4 hotkeys be spaced together more closely, i.e., Ctrl-Alt-Shift + z, or x or a or s.

Shortcut key customization will come in the next update. Since there is no customization yet, I tried to use really complex combination to make sure there is no conflict with other software. Right now, it is more for users with other software that can trigger shortcut keys (e.g. Stream Deck, VoiceAttack).

hello, I want to ask you if it is possible to record a flight, and then load it into the sim (FS2020) as an AI, so that with another plane I can fly it together. It would be useful for doing formation flights.

Yes it is possible. Next to the Replay button you should see an arrow for replay as AI. However, you might experience some jittery from the AI aircraft at high speed (which does not happen when replay the same data on the player's aircraft), so close formation might not be possible/enjoyable.

Hi,

this tool is great!

What I would like you to ask is, is there any possibility to actually develop this flight recorder in such a way that it will also record the live actions while recording. For example, if I start engines in the recording and turn on light after light, could this be also displayed in the record one to one as it happened while recording?

Is that possible?

That is possible to a certain extend. E.g. if you use the C152, you should see flaps, gears and lights get replayed. This is the full list of what is recorded/replayed https://github.com/nguyenquyhy/Flight-Recorder/blob/main/FlightRecorder.Client.SimConnectMSFS/Structs.cs .

However, many aircraft such as the 32NX implements custom systems (e.g. hydraulic, lighting), and ignore the data sent to the sim, so replaying is not possible without building specifically for each aircraft.

Another thing is that I purposefully not replay start up procedure due to the complexity and the indeterministic nature. Replaying the exact same steps might not start the engine due to different replay condition.

That depends on definition of "work."

If you expect every switches and levers to move, that won't happen.

If you are expecting flap & gear to move as recorded, that should work for all aircraft that sync with default sim variables (i.e. all default aircraft and many 3rd party ones). However, if the aircraft itself ignore the data sent to the sim and just does its own thing, the tool won't be able to do much about that. One way to workaround that is to push some buttons on your own during replay.

And if you just expect the aircraft to move as recorded, that should already work.

I don't do anything, I just hit record and when the flight is over, with the plane still running, I hit play and the simulator tells me that the aircraft has crashed into an object...... I don't know what to do .

To ensure that theairplane is not stressed when you replay the flight recorder disable all crash and stress detection when you wanna replay. Because all the "physics" still plays when you replay. So if you are at TAS 480 kts and at FL400 when you start the recorder then after you park at your gate with your gears out and you press replay from the point of recording at said speed and altitude, of course the plane is gonna crash due to stress.

Normally I don't need to turn off stress damage, but yes it can cause crashes in certain cases.

Definitely have to turn off crash detection though. One of the reason is that when you click Replay, the aircraft might be moved a great distance from where it was. At that point the highly detailed terrain is not loaded yet, so the low resolution terrain might clip the landing gear (or the hold aircraft), trigger the landing gear crash detection,

Works well!

One question, when replaying, it does not show the gear or flaps retracting, they just stay in the same position, even though I retracted them whilst recording, is this meant to happen ?

It's up to the aircraft itself. If the dev use the standard system, or read the data sent to the sim via SimConnect, gear and flap would work. And vise versa, it won't work if the dev implements a custom hydraulic system and just ignore what is sent to the sim.

It works, but there are issues with reversers, spoilers and ailerons. Spoiler problem can be worked around by retracting and rearming before each replay.

I don't know if it's only for me but after last update gear stay down and does not get retracted, any help please? 😀

EDIT : I'm tryin' again and seems like was a "random" bug with the SC Design F-16, I'll let you know if happens again! Probably does not always work with some planes?

The tool simply sends the data if the gear is down or up to the sim. The aircraft still has to react accordingly.

Most default aircraft reacts as you would expect because that is a feature of the built-in systems. However, custom hydraulic implementation from 3rd party dev normally just ignores those information and simply look at their own separate states.

There is unfortunately no good way to handle this universally unless everyone agrees to use a standard system.

This tool does not record video, you have to use an other recorder software for that, such as OBS.

Are there key-bindings to start/stop record or alternatively is there a parameter for launching the recorder with automatically start recording? Just want to start a record while I`m in VR without removing the headset. I own voiceattack and could bind key-shortcuts or a program-start to a voice-command.

You can save the recording into a .fltrec file, then upload to some file sharing service (i.e. OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, etc.) and share the link.

Why on replay, upon landing, the reverse thrust and the speed brakes are not functioning ? and the sound seems to be constant without any variation upon replay.. Am I doing it wrong or any other issue to be fixed? Sim Update 9 .

If you are using the FBW 32NX (or some similar aircraft), the aircraft implements custom systems for thrust and hydraulic, which means there is no way to record and replay with standard system.

I don't have plan to support those custom systems at the moment. It will require a lot of effort for each aircraft, and can potentially break everytime the aircraft dev decide to change again since they follow no standard to support record & replay.

How to install/upgrade the tool?

You can just download the zip file of any version, unzip it and run FlightRecorder.Client.exe.

What are the differences between Save and Export?

Save produces a .flightrecorder file that can be loaded later by the tool (using Load button).
Export produces a .csv file that can be opened in Excel for analysis.

Why does reverser not work?

There seems to be a bug in the 32NX experimental version that does not react to thrust lever data from SimConnect, which means the tool has no way to activate reverser. I have filed an issue at https://github.com/flybywiresim/a32nx/issues/3703 (from the look of it, doesn't seem like FlyByWire will fix the issue).

If you are not using that version, most likely you are using a physical thrust lever that conflicts with Flight Recorder by trying to take over control from the replay tool. The easiest way to test this (also a workaround) is to create a clone binding profile and remove the thrust binding.
