Château de Flers is a castle located in the town of the same name , in the west of the Orne department. The most important parts date back to the 16th century, and it is located in the middle of a vast park including a pond and a forest area.
The origin of the castle dates back to medieval times. It is then a modest construction, in stone and half-timbered, surrounded by ditches. At the junction of several valleys, the site was chosen because its marshy terrain offered interesting defensive possibilities.
The east wing of the castle, flanked by its two corner turrets, is the oldest part. It was built by Nicolas III de Grosparmy between 1527 and 1541. In the middle of the 16th century , the title of Baron de Flers went to the Pellevé family , one of whose members, Nicolas, made a brilliant alliance with one of the greatest families in Brittany, the Rohans. The estate was enriched with the castellany of Condé-sur-Noireau, and in 1598, the barony of Flers was erected into a county.
During the 17th century, a square flowerbed surrounded by water is laid out under the windows of the east wing of the old main building (in place of the current kindergarten). It is extended by a vegetable garden and an orchard of the same shape. Two paths of 500 to 600 cedars underline the axis of this composition. After the fire of the old outbuildings, new buildings are built in the axis of the main courtyard.
The west wing, remodeled by Ange Hyacinthe de La Motte-Ango at the beginning of the 18th century, became the main building. After his death in 1788, his son François Paul inherited the estate. During the Norman chouannerie, he authorized its leader, the Marquis de Frotté, to establish his headquarters at the Château de Flers in 1793, then in 1799 and 1800. The old part of the château was burned down by the Republicans in 1800.
In 1806, Count Jean Sigismond Ehrenreich de Redern Bernsdorf a truculent Franco-Prussian businessman, acquired the county of Flers and the castle from the La Motte-Angoet family and restored the castle. In 1822, Antoine Schnetz acquired the property for his own account and subsequently became mayor of Flers and opened up the park to the public.
In 1901, after the last descendants of the Schnetz family returned to the capital, Julien Salles, mayor of Flers, bought the estate on behalf of the municipality. The castle has been housing the town hall and the museum since then.
This castle has been listed as a historic monument sinceApril 24 , 1907.
This mod also includes the Château de Mont de Cerisy-Belle-Etoile which was a mansion surmounted by a crenellated tower, built in the neo-Tudor style in the 1870s on the initiative of a wealthy London lawyer, Lord Burkingyoung, then taken over by a local industrialist, Isidore Corbiere. Used by the Germans during the Second World War as a communications center for the Luftwaffe , the building was bombed by British aircraft in 1944 and has only been partially restored. The ruins of the castle are located approximately 8km northwest of the Château de Flers.
Both castles were recreated based on pictures provided by plouf099. The Château de Flers comes with its own lights and POI.
